ADHD: What has become of children, 30 years later? Dr. Rachel KleinMar 21, 2012
In this interview conducted at the NYU Child Study Center on Feb. 24, 2012, Rachel Klein, Ph.D., talks about a first-of-its-kind research study, which followed children diagnosed with ADHD into adulthood. First diagnosed in the 1970's at an average age of 8, the study undertook follow-ups at roughly ages 17, 25, and 41. While a majority of the children went on to successful adult lives, around 20% developed something called Anti-Social Personality Disorder, which is strongly associated with negative outcomes in adulthood, including substance abuse and criminality. Dr. Klein gives background on the study and discusses general findings. Dr. Klein is the Fascitelli Family Professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and the Director of the Anita Saltz Institute for Anxiety and Mood Disorders at the NYU Child Study Center and Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, NYU Langone Medical Center.

ADHD St. Louis: What is ADHD? What Causes ADHD in Children? St. LouisMay 24, 2012
www.AboutADHDStLouis.com 314-984-8412 ADHD St. Louis What is ADHD? What Causes ADHD in Children or Adults? What kind of testing for ADHD is available? What is ADHD treatment? Some of the more common questions people ask Dr. Collins are related to causes for ADHD in children and adults and what can be done to help those who have symptoms of ADHD but have not been diagnosed with the disorder. Working with a professional to obtain testing for ADHD is always a good place to start. This will help you understand what is ADHD and possible treatments for ADHD. Dr. Collins says ADHD is a neurological problem that's difficult to diagnose because symptoms are variable and the cause is not singular. Research has shown that genetics is a factor, diet is a concern, constant overstimulation from TV and video games all play a part in the development of ADHD. From research we also know five to sixteen percent of all children from 1st to 12th grade have been diagnosed with ADHD. Five percent of adults have also received an ADHD diagnosis. By a ratio of three to one, boys are affected with ADHD more than girls. Geographically, ADHD is more prevalent on the east coast than on the west coast. Of the children who do have ADHD, 60 to 70 percent of them also have anxiety, depression, ODD, borderline personality disorder, mood problems, OCD, or bi-polar disorder. This makes it extremely complex and difficult for most therapists, physicians or counselors to be definite in their diagnoses. In fact ...

Learning Disabilities & ADHD St. Louis - Temper Tantrums in ChildrenMay 10, 2012
www.LearningDisabilitiesStLouis.com 314-984-8412 Children with learning disabilities or ADHD tend to have temper tantrums or meltdowns. Is this a child discipline issue? Some of the more common questions parents ask Dr. Collins are related to temper tantrums and meltdowns in children with learning disabilities. Why are these meltdowns happening? What are temper tantrums? Is this a child discipline issue? What can be done about them? Working with a professional to obtain testing for learning disabilities, brain mapping, QEEG or academic assessment is always a good place to start. Dr. Collins sees temper tantrums often associated with children with learning disabilities or ADHD. Typically these tantrums can be signs that the child's brain is being overwhelmed by everything happening at one time or the chaos of an event. The situation is often complicated by the fact that the child's brain cannot process all of this sensory information and figure out how to deal with the situation in a calm manner. These times are very difficult for those around them, and sometimes it feels like there are no easy solutions. The good news is that there are therapies that address the information overload or sensory disorder in the brain. Brain exercises or neurofeedback therapy are much like physical exercises, which enhance the way the mind works and helps children with learning disabilities, who are also struggling with temper tantrums, deal with everyday situations more easily. If you or ...
ADHD Treatment For Children - Using New ApproachesMay 03, 2012
tinyurl.com Parents are now looking beyond ADHD meds for new approaches, simply because their side effects are too worrying. ADHD treatment for children is now looking at much broader horizons. We are looking in this video at how neurofeedback can really help some children to start concentrating and gain confidence again at school as they find new energy from a better organised brain. Neurofeedback gives valuable brain training and some results are impressive. Homeopathic remedies for ADHD are also on the agenda and have been for many years. However, the scorn poured on these cures refuses to take into account that they take a holistic approach so it is useless to look for scientific evidence that they are actually effective. They are geared to restoring the delicate body mind balance. ADHD treatment for children is now improving as parents and carers take a much broader view and regard parenting skills as equally important, if not more, than the ADHD meds themselves. www.youtube.com
